RFID for Dynamics AX
RFID is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects. There are several methods of identification, but the most common is to store a serial number that identifies a person or object, and perhaps other information, on a microchip that is attached to an antenna (the chip and the antenna together are called an RFID transponder, or an RFID tag). The chip, which is about the size of a grain of sand, activates a signal when it approaches an electronic reader. Though RFID technology has been around since World War II, when it helped ground soldiers identify fighter planes as friend or foe, the cost of developing it has been prohibitive. Now, thanks to advances in technology, RFID is here to stay. Business experts predict that RFID chips will be found in thousands of products by 2010, and that the technology will revolutionize supply chain, manufacturing, and retail efficiency.
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is another area of improvement in AX 4.0. RFID is replacing barcodes in some supply chain applications, in particular the consumer goods and hardlines supply chains--both areas where the Axapta product line has been adopted--so RFID support should be welcomed among AX 4.0 users, particularly as RFID trickles down to the mid-market, which is where Axapta is strongest.
A key component of Dynamics is new RFID functionality, which will give organizations greater visibility into their supply chain and the ability to better manage their supplier networks from end to end, from raw materials to point of sale. Built on the recently announced BizTalk RFID, this new RFID functionality will reduce the complexity associated with the management of intelligent RFID device hardware by connecting real-time RFID events to relevant supply-chain processes and back-end business applications.
For customers that want deeply vertical functionality beyond the core solution, Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 provides a platform on which partners can extend the solution with their own particular vertical expertise.
